1st Grade Reading Tips
Helping your child with his or her 1st grade reading skills is one of the most important steps that you can take to ensure your child is a successful reader. During kindergarten, the foundation was laid for your child to begin reading. Letter recognition was practiced and your child was taught the sounds that each letter makes. Once those skills are mastered, it is important for children to practice blending those sounds together to become successful readers. However, there are many words that are only learned by memory. Remember that it is always important to be patient when children are learning how to read. It can be tempting to become frustrated when children are first learning how to read, or to continually tell them what the correct word is. However, for children to fully derive the most benefit from their reading practice, it is best if they sound out words for themselves.
