If You Are A 1st Grade Or K Teacher: Do You Think You Will Have To Start Teaching Fractions And X’s Tables?
I was just wondering because, schools are changing all the time; and I was thinking if teachers would have to start teaching 1st grade and Kindergarten fractions and X’s tables.
No, I would be very surprised if that happened. I have taught in many schools and the earliest I have seen multiplication taught is grade 2 and I don’t think fractions usually starts until about grade 4. Obviously, the concept of half and quarter is taught much earlier but nothing complex.
Kids can’t learn multiplication until they have perfected addition as multiplication is an extention of addition. Likewise, division is an extension of subtraction. Students are first taught addition and then subtraction. By the middle of grade 2, students are generally proficient enough in addition that they can begin multiplication.
Of course there are always exceptions and some students are ready for multiplication much earlier than their classmates. And of course, some students are not ready to begin multiplication until much later than grade 2.
To begin multiplication in kindergarten, students would first have to have a firm grasp on addition and subtraction and I don’t this will ever happen.
probably not in kindergarten or first grade. minor fractions maybe, i.e. “There was four worms in the apple and then half of them left. how many worms are in the apple now?” schools are teaching more and moving quicker now, but not so much elementary schools.
No third or fourth grade.
No because then they will all fail.
no, this starts at the end of gr 2 and beginning of grade 3
