If You Are A 1st Grade Teacher; What Kind Of Math Do You Teach Your Students?
I know they learn addition and substractions, do you as teachers have to teach them there X’s tables, or does that start in 2nd grade? I will be a student in the spring, and I am majoring in elementary education. I would love to teach 1st grade. I was just wondering when they start there X’s tables.
I teach first grade in South Carolina and in math this year my students will learn: addition and subtraction facts, adding and subtracting 2 digit numbers without regrouping, measuring in inches, telling temperature, time to the half-hour, counting money using pennies, nickels, dimes, and quarters, constructing a graph (bar graph) and answer questions about it, greater than/less than, creating and extending visual and numeric patterns, introduction to probability, calendar, 2-D & 3-D shapes, and place value. I’m sure I forgot some things but this is a general idea of the different areas we cover throughout the year. If you find out what math series your schoold district uses than you can probably find a break down of each unit online somewhere. The best place to start would probably be your state’s curriculum requirements for first grade. This will tell you what the children need to know by the end of first grade.
Multiplication is definitely not taught in first grade in any school I know of. They have to learn enough as it is, these kids are only 6 & 7 years old!
Multiplication facts are generally introduced in the third grade. First grade math usually consists of basic addition and subtraction facts. Second grade moves up to 2 and 3 digit addition and subtraction with and without regrouping. Of course many other mathematical concepts are taught as well at each grade level such as measurement, patterns, money, telling time, story problems, etc.
that starts in second grade all you do is like teach them to count by 2 and 3 and 4 stuff like that or give them a paper that you put numbers in every now and than but they need to put the numbers that go in in between the numbers that you put dow ex: 1 9 17 36 like that but go all the way to 100
it used to be in 3rd grade but some schools start in 2nd now
