Is Kindergarden A Requirement To Go To 1st Grade?

Do you have to go through kindergarten or if your child is old enough, can they go to 1st grade w/out going to kindergarten?

It really depends on the state you are in. I’m in Virginia and there is an age requirement. All children that are 5 years old on or before September 30 of the current year must be enrolled in school. I’m not certain about how that works if you want to put your child in private school or if you are considering homeschooling.
My son and stepson are separated because of the cut off date. My son was born in July and he started Kindergarten last year and will be going to 1st grade this fall. My stepson was born in November so he’s going to be starting Kindergarten this fall. If you are transferring from another state, Virginia doesn’t hold it against you or your child if they didn’t go to Kindergarten. If you have a child that is gifted, you can have your child evaluated (which may include testing) and depending on the results will determine if your child can skip a grade. Some school systems in Virginia really frown upon your child not being enrolled in preschool. I chose not to have my boys go to preschool. I taught my son his ABC’s, numbers through 20, colors, and shapes. I used PBS (and PBS Sprout) programming as well as the internet to help him. I had no control over my stepson going to preschool. I have been working steady with him to help improve his speech. He has a lot of issues with pronouncing words. I’ve been trying to teach him the alphabet and he has about half of it down. He can do some numbers. Colors is very challenging for him, but he knows some shapes.
Back when I started school it was different. All children were required to enroll in first grade. I was enrolled in kindergarten so my mother could return to the workforce sooner.
I recommend that you contact your local public school system for more information. They can point you in the right direction and guide you. Some school systems require preschool to go to kindergarten and some require kindergarten to go to 1st grade. If you are receiving any public assistance, a worker at your local Social Services department could also help to answer your question (you can even call if you do not or are not interested in receiving benefits.). Social Services will strongly encourage you to enroll your child to enroll in school a step before required. More funding for public schools if more children are enrolled.
I hope that some of this helps you :)

As interesting as it is, Kindergarten in most of the States (United States) is not a requirement. However, is it wise not to send a child to Kindergarten? Not really. Kindergarten is the transition into primary school and much is learned there besides just academics. Alot of the “foundation for learning” is set in Kindergarten. However, if your child is advanced…this may be a possibility. The school district may wish for your child to “test in” to first grade though. They don’t want a child not to be successful. Skipping a grade is not always benefitial. You could call your public school and ask them about the legalities as well as their policies. Good luck!

I live in Florida and here it is a requirement. In fact they have something for 4 year olds at all daycare and public schools called VPK pre-kindergarden to get them ready.
I would hate for you to hold the child out and when they are old enough for 1st grade they have to go back and do kindergarden cause they never did it.

most of the time it is. yep it does depend on the state. sometimes you can get your child tested to see how smart they are if they do well on the test then they will not be required to go. they will advance without ever going to Pre-K. Ididn’tt have to go because of the test but my parents wanted me to go so that I can enjoy childhood as well as learn some life skills like sharing and best of all getting my nap, milk and cookies. lol

You definitely have to go to Kindergarden first then 1st grade. Just like you would have to graduate 5th grade, before going in to 6th grade, you couldn’t just jump in, even if you were old enough.

hey have to go to kindergarten but there’s this new thing called “step up”. It’s like kids who aren’t ready for first grade yet [almost like failing kindergarden but not really]. It’s a combination of kindergarden and first grade.

In many states kg is a absolute prerequisite in order to move on to the next grade. unless ur kid is knows how to read and knows his/her basics he/she will go on to the next grade by skipping it

I am pretty sure that you need to go to kindergarden. It was not like that a long time ago, but I am pretty sure it is now.

You’d think it was important, but I can;t say that I have ever been asked about any of my preschool qualifications at job interviews.

  • Lovin29 says:

yes. Kindergarten is a requirement. Perhaps in some states or schools one can test out…I’ve never known that to happen though.
