Orlando Schools Succeed with Direct Instruction Reading Programs

Bonneville Elementary receives a PRIDE award from publisher SRA/McGraw-Hill for adacemic performance improvement. SRA’s programs were implemented to improve student reading skills and increase performance on standardized tests. Over 81% of the school’s students are now reading on grade level.

Use the webcast viewing guides to initiate or continue professional dialogue and instructional planning on enhancing literacy in your school or district. In addition, take advantage of the webcasts’ mini-collections—small sets of ORC resources containing additional instructional examples, lesson ideas, and supplemental resource materials. Lastly, use the reference bibliographies provided for further information and reflection on effective teaching with informational texts.

Operation storybook 2009

Studies show nearly two-thirds of low-income families own no books for their children, yet book ownership is one of the strongest predictors of future reading success. To prevent the resulting achievement gap, Sheltering Arms Early Education & Family Centers launches the fourth year of Operation storybook. Operation storybook provides 2300 children—most from low-income working families–with 12 new books for their home libraries over the next year. Early learning and parent education programs bring these books alive for Sheltering Arms children and their families.
