What Do They Do With A Child Who Fails The 1st Grade Twice?

The little boy my grand daughter babysits for is failing the 1st grade again. What do they do with a child like this, I’m sure he can’t be kept in the first grade forever, he has many problems, A.D.H.D. and he is dyslectic. I feel so bad for him, what kind of help is there?

Most states and districts allow for “social promotion” and in this case that sounds like it is definitely an option to discuss with the teacher and/or principal.
If it is in the United States and he has an ADHD diagnosis then he also has an IEP. The IEP is managed by the ARD Committee and he is considered to be under the guidelines of the IDEA. [I know a lot of abbreviations.] The bottom line is this, if he has been diagnosed with ADHD then he is Special Education and the ARD committee will not allow him to fail.
If he has a psychiatrist or psychologist diagnosis and is not classified Special Education this is against federal law (IDEA) and it is up to the parent(s) to make the district aware. The district then is bound by the IDEA guidelines and the state Special Education Code to provide the services the child needs to be successful.
    Hope this helps ..

We have a rule in our district (i don’t know if it is a state rule) that we can only retain a student once. My question in this case is has the student been tested for special ed? If he is a special ed student, they can receive services in any grade. So, my advice is that if he hasn’t been tested, that should be done first. If he is special ed, he should go ahead and go to 2nd grade. Schools should be following the RTI model which is a way to group students within a classroom.

Well, that depends on his parents’ financial situation, considering the fact that they have a babysitter,it shouldn’t be too bad.I would recommend getting him a private tutor or something of the sort.
