First grade is the most difficult grade to teach. It sets the foundation for the years ahead. But to answer your question, my students learn math (counting, adding, subtracting diving, sorting and some basic geometry.) reading (which can include doing author studies or reading books in a series and doing an oral presentation) science (nature, seasons, senses etc) social studies (families, government, transportation etc) art, music and spelling, writing (yes, they write simple stories and essays) and various other activities.
from what i remember…
we had to write out numbers to a 1000. Read clifford type of books. Have spelling tests on small words, ex. book, red, read…stuff like that. I had a pen pal in arkansas (im from chicago) that we wrote letters too. There was art, music, lunch, gym class…and my teacher was african american and she taught us some of the zimbabwe culture. I dont really remember what else. this was like 13 yrs ago for me. Im not sure what they do now. I know it very much so varies ont he school. There are some private schools that teach first graders different languages and other intelectual stuff thats advanced from normal first grade stuff.
